Chapter Seven

Cade awoke with Jed’s arm draped over his waist. Images of the night they shared together flashed in his mind. Panic struck him, instantly making his heart pound. He wanted it, but now he had reservations, lots of reservations.

Sliding out of Jed’s bed quietly, Cade went to his own room and pulled out a fresh set of clothes. He needed out of there, needed some time to reflect and think about everything. The sobering facts were life changing.

After a quick shower Cade peeked in Jed’s room, noting he was still asleep. While tiptoeing Cade grabbed his cell and exited the house. A quick reservation for the two-o’clock flight back to Chicago seemed to be the best answer. The only problem now was telling Jed that he was leaving. He paced the back deck, working up the courage to wake Jed and ask for a ride to the airport.

“Fuck!” he cursed, hating himself for running out on Jed and the ranch, but the turmoil inside his head wouldn’t rest. What he and Jed had shared was the hottest and most erotic act he’d ever been a part of, but on the flip side, he was making even more life-changing decisions than an occupation.

Quitting his job and taking on a new venture was one thing, but his sexuality and all that he’d been raised to believe was true and right hung like a lump in his throat. What would his parents say? His friends? Was he even gay at all, or was he rebounding into another round of heartache?

The cold morning air made him shiver as he stood outside in only a T-shirt and jeans. He looked out at the vast open ranch covered in frost. The light reflected off of it, making it a heavenly scene to behold. He knew he’d miss all of this. He’d miss Jed, but for now he needed to give serious thought to his future, away from here, and especially away from Jed.

“Hey, man, aren’t you cold?” Jed asked as he walked out onto the porch.

Cade turned. “I need a ride to the airport,” was all he could say, earning a bewildered look.

Jed rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Something wrong back home?”

“You could say that,” Cade lied.

“It’s about last night. Isn’t it?” Jed asked, walking closer. “I didn’t mean to push, but I can feel what is going on between us. Can’t you?”

“Yeah, I can, and it scares the hell out of me,” Cade confessed and looked away from Jed’s penetrating gaze.

Jed exhaled loudly and poked his hands into his pockets. “I know, man.”

“I need to go home and get my shit together. My mind has been fucked up ever since my wedding day.”

“You think it’s a typical rebound. Don’t you?”

Cade turned to Jed. “I don’t know what I think anymore. I love it here,” he said, motioning toward the ranch. “I enjoy our friendship and how I feel around you. I don’t have to be anyone else or act like anyone else.” He sighed and looked away.
